PROCLAMATION 2004-25
WHEREAS Cecil Esther Tarbutton Clark was born on August 21, 1904 in Troup, Texas to James and Carrie Tarbutton. After graduating from Troup High School, she attended Sam Houston Normal
Institute here in Huntsville, Texas. She met and married Lindsey S. Clark on March 14, 1924; and
WHEREAS Cecil and Lindsey had three children. In 1942, Lindsey was killed in a motorcycle/car accident and she took over his partnership in the South End Laundry and Dry Cleaning business.
In 1956, she sold her share of the business and became a dormitory director at Sam Houston State College. After twelve years she decided that it was time to retire, because she wanted
to so some traveling. However, Mrs. Grace Cox convinced her to work at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and she worked there from 1969 until 1978; and
WHEREAS She has eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. All three of her children graduated from Sam Houston State University as well as two of her grandchildren; and
WHEREAS Cecil loves history and has been collecting articles and books about Sam Houston, Huntsville, Sam Houston State University, Texas, and many other historical places. She even
researched and compiled information for the Huntsville Women’s Forum. She is a member of the SHSU Alumni Association. She has been a member of the Walker County Historical Society,
Huntsville Book Review Club, Friends of Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Huntsville Area Newcomers Club, and a member of the First Baptist Church since 1923. She enjoyed traveling with
the Huntsville National Bank Gold Citizens; and
WHEREAS Some other tidbits about Cecil is that she loves butterflies, flowers, quotes and sayings, playing dominoes and bingo, cooking, traveling, her family, and being independent;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Huntsville, Texas, that:

be declared:

in Huntsville, Texas.
