WHEREAS on Tuesday night, October 5, 1971, Mrs. Ashley came home and informed her son Darnell (“Pap”) that he had a job with the City of Huntsville and would be a Sanitation Engineer;
and
WHEREAS Pap, at 18 years of age, began his career with the City on October 7, 1971 at 10:00 pm on the back of Mance Williams’ residential garbage truck; and
WHEREAS As a crewman, he collected garbage using a cardboard box and then advanced to using a #2 washtub; and
WHEREAS After five years as Residential Crewman, Pap was promoted to Residential Driver; and
WHEREAS For years, as the driver, Pap and his one crewman picked up garbage three times a week per household, from 10:00 pm until 6:00 am in the morning and only had Saturdays off; and
WHEREAS Since Pap began his career he has driven 297,316 miles and stopped 2,662,400 times to collect 25,600 tons of garbage; and
WHEREAS For 32 years, Pap has been professional in the way he dealt with the public, his crew and the way he performed his job, and should be commended for being instrumental in Sanitation’s
superior reputation over the years; and
WHEREAS Pap retired January 5, 2004, and his philosophy in life after 32 years with the City is “Hey man, you know what to do”; and
WHEREAS Pap has been married to Alpha for 23 years, has four children and three grandchildren (all GIRLS);
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville that

be proclaimed
“DARNELL “PAP” ASHLEY DAY”
in the City of Huntsville. I urge all citizens to join in recognizing the dedication and hard work of Pap during his 32 years with the City of Huntsville.
