PROCLAMATION 2004-01
WHEREAS First Christian Church became a congregation on January 1, 1854, through the aid of Joseph Addison Clark of Midway, Texas, an original co-founder of Texas Christian University;
and
WHEREAS The church originally met for worship and study in the Walker County Courthouse or in the homes of members; and
WHEREAS Benton Sweeney of Augusta, Texas, close friend of Sam Houston, began his work as the first resident minister of First Christian Church on January 1, 1863; and
WHEREAS During Reverend Sweeney’s pastorate, the congregation purchased the lot where the first sanctuary was built. The church met in several buildings until 1931, when the church
moved to its last home in 1963; and
WHEREAS Today we celebrate a new year and a new era for the church;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville that
January 1, 2004
be proclaimed
“First Christian Church Day”
in the City of Huntsville.
