WHEREAS injuries and deaths from traffic crashes bring loss and suffering to the citizens of our community; and
WHEREAS nearly one-half of traffic-related deaths in Texas are alcohol related; and
WHEREAS an estimated total of 170,190 crashes in Texas involved alcohol, and these crashes killed 1,751 and injured an estimated 63,500 people in one year; and
WHEREAS the economic cost of such injuries and deaths cost citizens of Texas Police Chiefs Association $14.0 billion in 2000, including $4.5 billion in monetary costs and almost $5.8
billion in quality of life issues; and
WHEREAS alcohol-related crashes accounted for an estimated 16% of Texas’ auto insurance payments, and reducing alcohol-related crashes by 10% would save $193 million in claims payments
and loss adjustments expenses; and
WHEREAS the “You Drink and Drive – You Lose” campaign has resulted in dramatic and immediate increases in seat belt use;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

be declared:
“YOU DRINK AND DRIVE-YOU LOSE” PROGRAM AWARENESS WEEK
in the City of Huntsville, and urge all citizens of and visitors to Huntsville to Buckle Up and Don’t Drink and Drive. We also challenge all our law enforcement officers to be out
in full force so we can save lives and reduce injuries.
