WHEREAS the Roberts Farris Log Cabin was in danger of complete collapse and disrepair in a remote location 17 miles west of Huntsville; and
WHEREAS Maggie Farris Parker and the Farris family offered to donate the cabin and $1,000 to the City of Huntsville for restoration of the cabin and the Robert B. Smither Estate agreed
to allow the use of their land in downtown Huntsville for relocation of the cabin; and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville Main Street Program, Sam Houston State University History Department, Texas Department of Criminal Justice and numerous other local organizations and individuals
united to relocate and restore the cabin; and
WHEREAS over $40,000 in cash, materials and labor was donated to Huntsville Main Street from private sources in order to complete the restoration; and
WHEREAS dozens of volunteers from four non-profit groups ( Huntsville Garden Club, Sam Houston Weavers & Spinners Guild, Tall Pines Quilt Guild and the Walker County Senior Center) joined
together in a spirit of cooperation to form the Cabin on the Square Association; and
WHEREAS the Cabin on the Square Association coordinates dozens of volunteers who staff the cabin six days a week as a downtown visitor center and important tourist attraction for downtown
Huntsville; and
WHEREAS through these volunteers, the cabin produces revenue for individual craftsmen and each of the non-profit groups represented in the cabin association, and generates sales tax
revenues for the City of Huntsville;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

CABIN ON THE SQUARE DAY
in Huntsville, Texas.
