19-library-vol-wkPROCLAMATION NO. 2003-19 WHEREAS In 1981, The Friends of the Huntsville Public Library was created; since that time hundreds of Huntsville citizens have supported the public library through their Friends membership; and WHEREAS In 1982, the Friends began sponsoring Saturday programming for children. Last year alone the Friends sponsored nine Saturday programs; and WHEREAS In 1986-87, the Friends worked with local Parent-Teacher Associations to sponsor children’s programs in Huntsville ISD. In the 2002-03 school year, two programs were held in HISD elementary schools; and WHEREAS In 1990-91, the Friends developed a “Sweet Feast” as their primary fundraising event. Held in a prominent citizen’s home, it provides a chance to sample great desserts and visit with Friends; and WHEREAS Since 1998, the Friends have been a major sponsor of the Texas Reading Club kick-off. In 2002, the Friends provided more than 900 books so each child who participated in the kick-off could have a book of their own; and WHEREAS Over the years, the Friends have provided computer equipment for the genealogy room; and have held numerous used book sales in the past two years; and WHEREAS In 2003, the Friends helped sponsor the 35th Birthday Party for the Library and Judy Hunter's retirement reception; and purchased 16 new chairs and two staff desks for the main library area to give the library a fresh look and to facilitate better patron service; and WHEREAS The Friends of the Huntsville Public Library is governed by a 16-member board including: Sylvia Gintz Bell, President; Karen Gillikin, Vice President; Cynthia Nethery, Secretary; Carol Williams, Treasurer; Teresa Cazort; Sam Hawkins; Marie Hayden; Morris Johnson; Barbara Lewis; Sena Maddux; Linda Masters; Gene Myrick; Sophia Davis Oliphant; Mary Frances Park; and Mattie Jewel Walker; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: May 11-17, 2003 be declared: FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY WEEK in Huntsville, Texas, in honor of their dedication through service to this community.
