05-monday-family-nightPROCLAMATION 2003-5 WHEREAS the City recognizes the value of youth participation in the community; and determined to create a Healthy Community-Healthy Youth Initiative; and WHEREAS the City and HISD in collaboration with the SEARCH Institute conducted a survey of youth in grades 7-12 to ascertain the number of Developmental Assets Huntsville students have in their lives; and WHEREAS the average number of Assets reported by HISD students was 17, and research shows that students with at least 20 Assets are less likely to partake in risk-taking activities such as drug and alcohol use and are more likely to succeed academically and socially; and WHEREAS the City contracted with Huntsville's Promise to manage the Healthy Community Initiative and to find ways to build Assets in the lives of Huntsville youth; and   WHEREAS Huntsville’s Promise has recommended the creation of a night designated solely for the building of Asset # 1 - Family Support; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: MONDAY NIGHT is hereby designated: FAMILY NIGHT in the City of Huntsville, and we encourage schools and organizations to limit the number of extracurricular activities scheduled for Monday nights and encourage businesses to offer family-based incentives and specials on Monday nights.
