29-dom-viol-aware-moPROCLAMATION 2002-29 WHEREAS home should be a place of refuge and harmony and relationships should provide unconditional love and support, and most of us can count home and relationships among our most valued blessings. Unfortunately, many Americans do not have the opportunity to receive these blessings because their relationships are marred with abuse and violence; and WHEREAS there are startling statistics like the fact that 31 percent of women have reported being abused by a husband or boyfriend and one out of every three murdered women in this country are killed by their husband or significant other. These facts show that domestic violence is a problem in this and every community across Texas and the United States; and WHEREAS women are not the only victims of domestic and dating violence. Children and the elderly can also be counted among victims. Furthermore, domestic violence infiltrates all aspects of our society and costs the nation between $5 and $10 billion dollars every year; and WHEREAS there are many citizens of Walker County that are working hard to increase consciousness and understanding about an offense so widespread and recognized. The volunteers and staff of the SAAFE House are also providing services to these victims 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; and WHEREAS October has been proclaimed National Domestic Violence Awareness Month every year since 1987 and all members of the community must recognize the seriousness of this epidemic, dispel the myths that surround us every day and take action to end this crisis. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville that OCTOBER 2002 be proclaimed “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH” in the City of Huntsville, urge all citizens to observe this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence, supporting those who are working to its end, and participating in community efforts. DULY SIGNED on this the 8th day of October 2002. _______________________________ William B. Green, Mayor
