13-tourismPROCLAMATION 2002-13 WHEREAS the tourism industry in Texas, the United States, and here in Huntsville generates a major economic impact; and WHEREAS the latest data available indicates that the travel industries impact on Walker County accounts for: $59 million in expenditures (an increase of 43% since 1994); and $12 million in payroll and accounts for 991 jobs; and local tax receipts from tourism amount to $689,000 (up 55% since 1994); and and state tax receipts from tourism amount to $4,570,000 (up 42%); and WHEREAS in 2000, Walker County was ranked in the top 18% of Texas Counties based on travel spending; and WHEREAS according to the latest statistics, travel spending by visitors in Texas reached $40.4 billion in 2000. The Texas travel and tourism industry employed 485,000 people in the state, who earned $11.2 billion. Travelers spent more than $110 million every day in Texas businesses. The travel and tourism industry generated a total tax impact of $2.2 billion; and WHEREAS without the local, state and federal taxes generated by the Texas travel and tourism industry, each household in Texas would face an additional tax burden of $792 per year to maintain established government services; and WHEREAS Texas Governor Rick Perry and the State Department of Economic Development are promoting Texas Tourism Week to coincide with celebration of National Tourism Week May 4-12, 2002; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas, that: MAY 4-12, 2002 be declared: “TOURISM WEEK” in Huntsville, Texas.
