tourism.proPROCLAMATION NO. 2000-11 WHEREAS The tourism industry in Texas, the United States, and here in Huntsville generates a major economic impact; and WHEREAS The latest data available indicates that the travel industries impact on Walker County accounts for:  $60.01 million in expenditures  $9.77 million in payroll  local tax receipts from tourism amount to $710,000  State tax receipts from tourism amount to $4,580,000; and WHEREAS Texas is the second most popular tourist destination in the U. S., generating over $34.6 billion yearly from travelers; and WHEREAS In 1998, direct travel expenditures generated 370,000 jobs and nearly $2.2 billion in tax revenue and without this revenue, each Texas household would pay an additional $805 in taxes to maintain existing government services; and WHEREAS Texas Governor George W. Bush and the State Department of Economic Development are promoting Texas Tourism Week to coincide with celebration of National Tourism week May 8-12,2000. NOW, THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas, that the same said week: MAY 8-12, 2000 be proclaimed: TOURISM WEEK in the City of Huntsville and do hereby urge all of our citizens to participate in the activities to attract visitors to our community . . . .
