PRESS RELEASE
On Friday, 08/22/14, shortly after 6:OOPM, officers with the
Huntsville Police Department responded to a shooting call in the
1400 block of Sycamore. Upon investigation it was determined
that a murder had occurred.
Earlier in the afternoon of 08/22/14 a domestic incident had
occurred in which Ray Charles Smith, DOB 11/28/52, was
determined to be the aggressor. The officers with the Huntsville
Police Department responded to the incident; however, Mr. Smith
had fled the scene prior to officers' arrival. The responding
officers conducted a search of the area in an attempt to locate Mr.
Smith but were unsuccessful.
Approximately an hour later, officers responded to the shooting
call in the 1400 block of Sycamore. Mr. Smith had been shot
multiple times. Walker County EMS had been called to the
scene as well and made every effort to save Mr. Smith but he,
unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.
Huntsville Police Department detectives were called to the scene to
conduct an investigation. It was determined that after the domestic
incident Mr. Smith obtained a ride to the area of the 800 block of
MLK Blvd. Once arriving in the area of the 800 block of MLK
Blvd., Mr. Smith was confronted by Garius O'Bryant, DOB 05/
26/95, and Joyce O'Bryant, DOB 06/13/45. Shortly thereafter
shots were fired at Mr. Smith, striking him multiple times. Mr.
Smith retreated to the vehicle in which he had been in and the
driver drove him to the 1400 block of Sycamore where police were
notified of the shooting. Garius O'Bryant and Joyce O'Bryant fled
the scene. During the investigation of the offense, Joyce O'Bryant
was located and transported to the Huntsville Police Department
for questioning.
As a result of the investigation by members of the Huntsville
Police Department and the Texas Rangers, warrants were issued
for the arrest of Joyce O'Bryant and Garius O'Bryant for the
charge of murder. Joyce O'Bryant was taken into custody and
transported to the Walker County Jail. Garius O'Bryant has yet to
be taken into custody and officers are actively searching for him.
Joyce O'Bryant was released from the Walker County Jail on 08/
23/14 on a $75,000 bond.
Murder is a l st degree felony and carries a possible punishment
of 5 years to 99 years imprisonment in the Texas Department of
Criminal Justice and a possible fine not to exceed $10,000.
