The new initiative titled Rock ’N The Arts will feature a variety of activities for all ages that are free and open to the public including art workshops, an outdoor sculpture reception at the Wynne Home Arts Center, a special performance art piece by Moroles at Old Town Theatre and an Arts After-Party at Sam Houston State University’s new off-campus Student Satellite Gallery. The NEA award was secured by the Huntsville Arts Commission, City of Huntsville for Arts Engagement in America. This is the third year the NEA has awarded a grant to the city. The NEA is a government agency that has given grants that have exceeded $4 billion to support artistic excellence for the benefit of both individuals and communities. Rock ’N The Arts is also made possible by matching support from the Huntsville Arts Commission and the Friends of the Wynne. Guest artist Moroles was born in Corpus Christi, TX in 1950 and graduated with a BFA from North Texas State University. He now resides and works in Rockport, TX. Moroles has had critical recognition of his name for his body of work for which he is widely known. He has received prestigious awards including the National Medal of Arts 2008, given by President George W. Bush. His sculptures and installations have been displayed in China, Egypt, France, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, the United States and other places around the world. The Wynne Home Arts Center activities taking place throughout the week will include renowned artist Moroles building a granite wall with community artists, workshops for adults and children and an outdoor sculpture reception at the Wynne Home Arts Center featuring live entertainment and food. In addition to granite workshops with Moroles, additional Rock ‘N The Arts workshops will include Raku pottery with Lynda McCreary, Stained Glass with Robert Ekis, and Fused Glass with Melanie Prouse and for children, Studio Arts with Tamara Chasteen, visits with Moroles, and dance workshops at Old Town Theatre. For the final night, Moroles will demonstrate what he describes as “tearing the granite” with a special performance art piece on stage at Old Town Theatre. The piece will merge the craft of sculpture and dance performance as Leslie Dockery, a graduate of SHSU’s Department of Dance leads local children in a dance piece as part of the performance. -MORE- Following the performance, audience members are invited to join SHSU’s College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication for art and refreshments as they host the Arts After-Party in the new off-campus Student Satellite Gallery. Located right around the corner from Old Town Theatre the 1,450-square-foot gallery officially opens this month with student art of display. Several groups and local organizations have joined forces to make this community initiative possible including The City of Huntsville, The Wynne Home Arts Center, Friends of Old Town Theater, Huntsville Main Street, SHSU College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication and SHSU Department of Art.
