Presenter:Aron Kulhavy, AICP, Director of Community& Economic Development

Discussion:
The City received a letter dated December 2, 2013 from American Legion Sam Houston Post 95
requesting to change the name of Industrial Drive to American Legion Drive.
The process of renaming a street is as follows:
1. Identify all adjacent property owners affected by the name change.
2. Send notice to all abutting property owners and public agencies of the proposed name change
and allow a 30 day comment period.
3. Work with the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance for Council consideration
4. If the ordinance is approved, staff will notify the property owners and service providers(post
office, 911, utility companies, etc...) of the name change and request the Streets Division to
install new street signs.
5. File the appropriate documents with the County Secretary's office as needed.
Industrial Drive is a public road intersecting with FM 2821. The first portion of Industrial Drive
(approximately 372 feet)was dedicated by plat as"Industrial Drive" and constructed by Henderson Land
Company in 1984 as part of Section 3, Henderson Land Co. Subdivision. In 2003, as part of Section 4,
Henderson Land Co. Subdivision and the City participated in funding half the cost of constructing the
street, drainage, water and sewer infrastructure, approximately 730 feet. The remaining half was paid
for by American Legion Sam Houston Post #95, Prestige Construction & Development, LLC, and J&M
Contracting.
There are seven (7) property owners that have property along Industrial Drive (and an access easement
for the future extension): American Legion Post #95; DB and JA Ward, Inc.; J&M Contracting Company
Inc.; Joslin Dean Property Management; Frank Robinson, III; Janet Tucker Robinson; and Wright
Equipment LLC.
The City sent written notice on December 4, 2013 to all property owners that have property fronting
Industrial Drive as well as utility providers, taxing districts, and Walker County offices of the possibility of
this name change. Staff received several calls inquiring about the request, but no on called in support or
opposition to the request. The Veterans Affairs Advisory Board supports the name change.
