A winter weather watch has been issued for the Huntsville/Walker County area for Friday, January 24, with
freezing temperatures expected to arrive by Thursday evening.
According to information from the National Weather Service, ice accumulations of as high as .15 inches are
currently expected, but may vary as the event approaches.
"At this point, we're expecting rain to begin on Thursday afternoon with freezing temperatures to arrive at 9 p.m.
that evening,"Waldo said. "As well, sleet and/or light snow is possible in the northern portion of Walker County,
while freezing rain and/or sleet is expected in the southern portion."
In light of the inclement weather forecast, Huntsville Police Department Lt. Jim Barnes urged citizens to exercise
caution while driving, and to be mindful of any icy conditions on roadways.
"Precipitation combined with temperatures near or below freezing could produce some ice accumulation on
bridges and elevated structures," Barnes said. "While we do not believe there will be enough of a temperature
drop to freeze the roads, we want to advise extreme caution when driving on any bridge or overpass. In general,
we would ask that drivers slow down, watch the roads, and be mindful of the vehicles around you."
