The Huntsville Police Department is currently investigating a multi-
jurisdictional theft ring that spans from Irving, Texas to Conroe, Texas.
According to HPD Lieutenant Jim Barnes, two instances of "purse
snatching" in the Huntsville Wal-Mart parking lot were observed by
concerned citizens and Wal-Mart employees, and information provided
by these onlookers led to suspect arrests.
"On January 9, an elderly female was the victim of a `purse snatching'
in the Huntsville Wal-Mart parking lot, and on January 10, a second
elderly female fell victim to the same crime in the same parking lot,"
Barnes said. "Thankfully, neither victim was injured, and a concerned
citizen was able to copy down the license plate number on the
suspect's vehicle on the January 9 incident. As well, an observant Wal-
Mart employee was able to provide the same license plate on the
second theft."
The Huntsville Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division
(CID) began following up leads and provided the Patrol Division the
information about the suspect's vehicle.
"On January 12, HPD Senior Officer Broderick Davis observed the
suspect vehicle in the parking lot of Motel 6. Officer Davis detained the
vehicle and its three occupants," Barnes said. "Meanwhile, additional
officers responded to the area and located four additional subjects in a
hotel room.
"Further investigation at the scene led to evidence of additional purse
thefts from elderly females ranging from Irving to Conroe. Huntsville
Police Detectives are working with detectives from agencies in those
areas to return the stolen property."
Miguel Rodriguez, an 18-year-old Huntsville resident, was arrested at
the scene for an out-of-county assault warrant and failure to identify.
Felony Theft charges are pending.
As well, Norma Carnedas - a 17-year-old Huntsville resident - was
arrested for failure to identify. Felony Theft charges are pending.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
Huntsville Police Chief Kevin Lunsford expresses his gratitude to the
citizens that were able to provide the suspect's license plate number,
which ultimately lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
