Proc. 2012-25 Girl Scouting Centennial Month 03-12PROCLAMATION NO 2012-25 WHEREAS, March 12, 2012, marks the tooth anniversary of Girl Scouting in the United States, as established by founder Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia; and WHEREAS, the first troops in Huntsville were formed in 1935, as part of the then-called Huntsville Girl Scout Council, later merging with the East Texas Girl Scout Council and, in 1970, with the present San Jacinto Council; and VVHEREAS, including the thirteen troops currently active, over 10,00o girls and adults in Huntsville/Walker County have served, including six young ladies who have earned their GOLD Award, the highest level possible in Girl Scouts since May 1996 ; and WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council sustains that each individual involved must uphold the tenet that Girl Scouting is for all girls and, through the Girl Scout Promise and Law, imparts to girls the invaluable significance of service, respect, responsibility, honesty and sisterhood; and WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has inspired millions of girls and women to discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to impact positive change in their communities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: March 2012 be declared: "Girl Scouting Centennial Month" in the City of Huntsville, and urge all citizens to recognize and support our local Girl Scouts organization and troops, and help celebrate this special anniversary at the parade and events on March 24, 2012.
