Proclamation No. 2023-9 National Day of Prayer
Proclamation No. 2023-9
WHEREAS throughout the history of our nation, in times of plenty, in days of scarcity, in periods of joy, and in moments of sorrow, many have turned to prayer, reaching out to a higher
being for courage, for guidance to give thanks and to seek solace; and
WHEREAS the first Continental Congress called for a National Day or Prayer in 1775 and President Abraham Lincoln called for a National Day of Prayer in 1863; and
WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer was established as an official annual day of observance in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President
Harry S. Truman. The law was amended in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to establish the first Thursday of every May as the National Day of Prayer; and
WHEREAS at this important time in our nation’s history, we pray for the brave members of our Armed Forces and their families, we pray for their safety, for the recovery of the wounded
and for the peace we all seek; and
WHEREAS the 2023 National Day of Prayer provides an opportunity to pray for our nation, its people and its leaders while honoring the commitment to religious liberty and tolerance that
contributes to our continued strength; and
WHEREAS there is power in prayer, we can find hope and comfort in the grace and guidance of a loving God.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Andy Brauninger, Mayor of Huntsville Texas,
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM May 4, 2023 as
