Proclamation No. 2023-8
WHEREAS, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University. The founders of Delta Sigma Theta envisioned an organization committed to sisterhood,
scholarships, and addressing the social issues of the time, to include service to the community; and
WHEREAS, the Kappa Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was chartered seventy years later, on April 27, 1973, on the campus of Sam Houston State University, becoming the first Sorority
for African American women on the Huntsville campus; and
WHEREAS, in the last 50 years, the Kappa Mu Chapter has held forty-three membership intakes amounting to five hundred ladies that have served the Huntsville community. After graduation,
these ladies have continued their community service efforts in their respective communities through various chapters around the world; and
WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville congratulates the Kappa Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on their 50 years of service to the Huntsville community; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Andy Brauninger, Mayor of Huntsville Texas,
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM APRIL 27, 2023, as
KAPPA MU CHAPTER of
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY DAY
