The City of Huntsville is currently in the process of making improvements to the Frank D. “Poncho” Roberts Aquatic
Center.
During the off-season, which began on August 25, the facility is closed for public use and utilized by local swim teams.
This presents an opportunity for City staff to address a number of improvements and maintenance concerns, particularly
in the children’s portion of the pool, which is not being utilized.
Specifically, Aquatic Center Manager Jay Miller is working to replace plaster in the children’s area, which will take place
at the conclusion of an ongoing bid process.
“The winter months are an opportune time to address facility improvements without disrupting services to our
residents,” Miller said. “One important project we hope to complete during this off-season is the replacement of plaster
in the bottom of children’s area of the facility. We anticipate starting this process within the next month and to have it
finished prior to the beginning of the 2014 season.”
While the children’s area is not being used, the majority of the facility remains fully operational as it is open to local
swim teams who practice year-round.
“In the winter and spring months when the facility is unavailable to the public, the City adheres to Section 303.1 of the
International Property Maintenance Code, which states that swimming pools shall be maintained in a clean and sanitary
condition, and in good repair,” Miller said. “At this time, as the main portion of the pool is being utilized by local swim
teams, it is subject to the full range of chemical treatments in effect during open season. In the children’s area, the
water in the pool is being circulated, with filtration still running as well.
“We also periodically add granular HTH – a common, dry chlorine used in home swimming pools - as an alternative to
the full range of chemicals utilized in-season.”
