The program was originally designed to help children keep up their reading skills during the summer by encouraging reading, and now includes teens and adults annually. The Library held a kickoff party on June 1, with residents registering online and in person. This year, the Library is celebrating readers whether it is the child who plans to read 50 books over their break or the reluctant reader setting his or her own personal goal. The rules vary based on the participant’s age group, which is open to all ages. “It all started Saturday, June 1, at the Kick-Off Party,” said City Librarian Linda Dodson. “Attendees registered for the Summer Reading Program, enjoyed a presentation by the Yuck Game Show, and light refreshments.” But don’t worry if you missed the party. Registration is still available online at myhuntsvillelibrary.com or you can head over to the library for help. So how does SRP work? Dodson explained that for every three books read, the participant will receive one raffle ticket. Additionally, for each library program attended, the participant will receive one raffle ticket. The first time a patron turns in their three books, they will receive a prize (while supplies last) based on their age group. The more books read and programs attended increases the chances of a reader winning a raffle prize during the Celebration Party. Participants can choose to enter their raffle tickets in various raffles. “The thing to keep in mind with the raffle is that once a person wins a raffle prize, he or she is ineligible to win another raffle prize,” said Dodson. The Huntsville Public Library has a number of exciting summer programs planned. For a full listing of all summer activities, visit MyHuntsvilleLibrary.com The last official day of Summer Reading is Friday, July 12, and the last day to turn in your reading logs and receive raffle tickets is Friday, July 19. Raffle prizes will be drawn at our Summer Reading Celebration Party at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23. Attendance at the Celebration Party to get a raffle prize is not required, Dodson said, but if prize winners do not pick up their prizes by Saturday, August 10, the prize is forfeited. The network is compatible with the majority of devices on the market today through both Wireless G and Wireless N technologies.
