23rd Annual HUB/Vendor Show
The City of Huntsville Main Street pro-
gram is hosting the Second Annual Ba-
con and Brew Fest from 10 a.m. to 7
p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2019, in down-
town Huntsville.
The festival is free to attend and will
include free bacon, a beer garden, arts
and craft vendors, live music and a kids
“pigpen” with bounce houses and other
kid-friendly activities.
Main Street Program Coordinator Tra-
cy Chappell said Main Street is excited
to build upon last year’s event and get
more of the community to visit down-
town Huntsville.
Local music artists including Raizin
Cain, Southern Disposition, John Slaugh-
ter, and Pushwater will be performing
throughout the day on a covered stage
area with tables for eating and relaxing.
Vendor space is still available and can
be reserved by visiting HuntsvilleMain-
Street.com.
The City of Huntsville Main Street pro-
gram is a redevelopment program that
uses a combination of organization, eco-
nomic development, infrastructure im-
provements, and promotions to revital-
ize downtown.

Bacon & Brew back for more
The City of Huntsville Purchasing Division, in association with TDCJ, Walker Coun-
ty, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville ISD, and the SHSU Small Business
Development Center, would like to announce the 23rd Annual HUB/Vendor Show.
The show will be held Wednesday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Re-
gion 6 Education Service Center, 3332 Montgomery Road.
This year’s show will feature a training session from 10 to 11 a.m. with sessions
on “How to do business in Texas School Districts” and “How to review a govern-
ment solicitation”. Both sessions are open to the public.
It is a rare opportunity to have a federal organization present on this in Hunts-
ville, and all local businesses are encouraged to attend.
This annual event allows vendors to display their products and services to gov-
ernmental entities from Walker County and surrounding areas. There are no costs
associated to attend, or to showcase products or services (tables will be provided,
vendors are encouraged to bring table coverings). To reserve a table, contact Cindy
Guajardo at 936-437-7061 or Ruby Cowan at 936-437-3128.
For questions or more information, please contact Procurement Manager Robert
Pearce at 936-291-5495 or RPearce@HuntsvilleTX.gov.
Volunteer
firefighters needed
CITY CONNECTION Page 2
The Huntsville
Fire Department is
composed of 16
full time and 30
volunteer firefight-
ers. The City cur-
rently has two vol-
unteer vacancies
that need to be
filled.
Fire Chief Greg
Mathis explained
that volunteer firefighters receive $12 per call and
retirement in the Texas State Firefighters’ and Fire
Marshals’ Association (SFFMA).
“Without these 30 men, we could not function
and provide the types of service we do. Everyone
hired for the position is trained to SFFMA stand-
ards, up to and equal to the certification levels of
the paid staff,” Chief Mathis said. “Personnel can
be members of specialty teams, and are trained to
operate all kinds of apparatus.”
There are also opportunities for part-time shifts
to be assigned for a stipend, depending on a per-
son’s certification level.
Chief Mathis said there is a hiring process, with
some required training necessary before becoming
an active member.
“If someone is interested in volunteering, I sug-
gest they attend one of our training sessions, held
on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month
at 6 p.m. at Station 2, next to Taco Bell on Sam
Houston Avenue,” Chief Mathis said. “This is a
chance to get to know the staff, review our pro-
cesses, and decide if this is the right fit.”
Chief Mathis noted that the City also has a bun-
ker program for college students interested in fire-
fighting. He explained that the program allows stu-
dents to live rent free in a station, in exchange for
services, training, and being involved in the day-to-
day operations.
“Volunteers and students are important to us,
because they are crucial to supplementing our
workforce,” Chief Mathis said.
“Our doors are open to those interested in this
position, and we welcome them to stop by any sta-
tion.”
Chief Mathis pointed out that many of the full-
time firefighters started in the Volunteer Fire De-
partment.
