Proc. 2020-34 - Huntsville Texas Pride Day - 9/1/2020 P roclamation N0. 2020-34 WHEREAS the history of the queer equal rights movement can be traced to the Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969, considered by many to be the launch of the modern gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer rights movement; and WHEREAS a year later, activists in New York City organized the first Gay Pride March in the United States, covering 51 blocks from Christopher Street to Central Park. Today, Pride Parades are held annually in multiple cities and countries throughout the world. The month of June is widely considered LGBTQ Pride month although smaller Prides celebrate in other months; and WHEREAS Huntsville Texas Pride’s mission is dedicated to creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ people and their allies in the Huntsville, TX area to connect, to express themselves, and to celebrate what makes all of us special. Our focus is on increasing LGBTQ+ acceptance and strengthening bonds with the local community by hosting social and educational events, participating in service work, and engaging in activism; and WHEREAS the Stonewall Riots were the result of the resilience of the Trans Queer community. In recognition of this history, Huntsville Texas Pride’s first Pride celebration will be held virtually on Saturday, September 19, 2020. Huntsville Texas Pride is grateful for the many acts of kindness demonstrated throughout the world, but as an organization, we are not blind to the brutality of the world we are living in today; and WHEREAS the City of Huntsville recognizes all those participating in Huntsville Texas Pride’s Virtual Pride for their commitment to the advancement of the LGBTQIA+ as they strive for equality themselves, their family members and their friends.
