P roclamation No. 2020-32
WHEREAS the bold, courageous and powerful women who fought for the ratification of the 19th
amendment to the United States Constitution on August 26, 1920, deserve special
celebration by the county of Walker, especially on the 100th anniversary of the its
ratification in 2020; and
WHEREAS Texas was the 9th state to ratify the 19th Amendment on June 28, 1919; and
WHEREAS Texas holds a special place in women’s suffrage history as thousands of Texas women
advocated for the right to vote on the streets, in the newspapers, in the state capital and
throughout the great state; and
WHEREAS Texas women gained the right to vote in a Primary Election March 26, 1918; and the
19th Amendment did not guarantee suffrage for all women, including Native Americans
