WHEREAS On Monday, the 16th of September, A.D., 1844, a meeting was held in the schoolhouse in
the town of Huntsville, Montgomery County, Republic of Texas, for the purpose of
organizing a Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church was one of the first churches in Texas and Huntsville; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church was one of the first to offer Sunday School classes; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church was the first to provide a Vacation Bible School for the children
of Huntsville; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church has been a leader in ministries to the Texas Department of
Criminal Justice and to the Sam Houston State University faculty and students; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church helped to organize the first Hispanic Baptist church in
Huntsville;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the
City of Huntsville, Texas that:
September 16, 2009
be declared:
"First Baptist Church Day"
in the City of Huntsville and urge the citizens of Huntsville and Walker County to
recognize the First Baptist Church for their 165 years of unselfish dedication and
spiritual leadership.
