WHEREAS breast cancer is the most common non -skin cancer among women across the globe,
affecting more than one in eight women in their lifetimes; Metastatic Breast Cancer
is the recurrence and spread (metastasis) of breast cancer and is a real and
frightening possibility for individuals who have had breast cancer, and
WHEREAS while a recurrence of breast cancer can be devastating, effective treatment enables
long, productive lives for many patients and new therapies prolong and greatly
improve the quality of life, but nearly 40,000 people with Stage IV breast cancer
are losing their fight each year; and
WHEREAS there are approximately 2.3 million breast cancer survivors, who are alive today
and if all women age 4o and older took advantage of early detection methods,
breast cancer death rates would drop much further, up to 30 percent and
WHEREAS raising awareness of this disease will help bring about acceptance, support,
solidarity, and will help advocate for medical advances and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville is pleased to join the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network in
recognizing the need for improved treatments and remind all citizens about the
importance of breast cancer screening to identify potential cancers at an early
stage;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBYPROCLA r1 ED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
