Proc. 2016-23 Huntsville Civil Rights Movement - Mattie Wolf, Huntsville NAACP Cofounder Day 11-18-15 PROCLAMATION No. 2016-23 WHEREAS HA-YOU, the Huntsville Action for Youth Movement, emerged in the 1960s for the purpose of desegregating the local community; and WHEREAS these students began organizing for the desegregation of public facilities by organizing marches, boycotts, and other nonviolent protests; and WHEREAS we gather today to soberly recall this time and the work of those who successfully attained the desegregation of local schools, accommodations, and businesses, including the faculties, staffs, and student bodies of HISD and SHSU, th in this year of HA-YOU’s 50 anniversary; and WHEREAS we hereby recognize the city's oldest civil rights group, the NAACP, which still exists today, and which indirectly paved the way for the successes that came in the later years of the struggle for civil rights, along with one of its founders, Mattie Wolf. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that November 18, 2015 be designated as: Huntsville Civil Rights Movement – Mattie Wolf, Huntsville NAACP Cofounder Day in Huntsville, Texas, and urge all citizens to celebrate the ongoing work of this important organization. th PROCLAIMED AND SIGNED this 18 day of November 2015. _____________________ Mac Woodward, Mayor
