RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS
SUPPORTING THE HUNTSIVLLE ARTS COMMISSION APPLICATION TO THE
TEXAS COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS FOR CULTURAL DISTRICT DESIGNATION.
WHEREAS the Huntsville Arts Commission works in cultural partnerships with Huntsville
Main Street, local businesses and organizations, artists, museums, and educational entities
including Sam Houston State University and Huntsville Independent School district; and
WHEREAS the Huntsville Arts Commission is seeking a Cultural District Designation from the
Texas Commission for the Arts for a Cultural District in Huntsville, with the historic downtown
at the core —and anchored on the north by the Eastham Thomason Park and the historic
Oakwood Cemetery; on the south by the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and the Performing
Arts Center of Sam Houston State University; on the east by the historic Huntsville Unit of
Texas Department of Criminal Justice; and on the west by the Samuel Walker Houston Cultural
Center and the Wynne Home Arts Center; and
WHEREAS a Cultural District could enhance economic activity and development, spur public
investment, develop tourism, complement other public and private redevelopment efforts, create
interest inside and outside the community, and provide a unified vision for the arts, culture, and
entertainment in Huntsville; and
WHEREAS the City Council of the City of Huntsville desires to support the Huntsville Arts
Commission in its application for Cultural District Designation from Texas Commission on the
Arts;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTSVILLE:
THAT the City Council of the City of Huntsville hereby supports the Huntsville Arts
Commission application to the Texas Commission for the Arts for Cultural District Designation.
