Proc. 2015-09 M. B. Etheredge Day 12-07-14 PROCLAMATION NO. 2015-09 WHEREAS Huntsville is proud to have been the home of LTC M. B. Etheredge, who was one of the most-decorated World War II veterans; and WHEREAS he was born in Weldon, Texas, and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1933 and from Sam Houston Teacher’s College in 1937, then taught and served as a school superintendent before enlisting in the U.S. Army; and WHEREAS during his service he was awarded three silver stars, two bronze stars, and two purple hearts, and received two battlefield promotions, including moving from Second Lieutenant to Captain in only six days; and WHEREAS after World War II, LTC M. B. Etheredge completed his Master of Arts Degree at Sam Houston Teachers College in 1947 and did postgraduate work at the University of Texas in Austin, was later elected to three terms in the Texas House of Representatives, served as a board member of the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce, as President of the Huntsville Rotary Club, taught at Sam Houston State University as an Associate Professor of Education, and chartered the American Bank of Huntsville and the Lake Area Bank of Trinity, where he served as Chairman of the Board; and WHEREAS the City of Huntsville previously proclaimed November 10, 1984 as M. B. Etheredge Day and also honored him by causing the street known first as Commerce Plaza to be renamed as LTC M. B. Etheredge Boulevard on August 22, 2000; and WHEREAS the city of Huntsville is proud of the legacy of LTC M. B. Etheredge, as he exemplified the values that make our country strong. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: December 7, 2014 be declared: M. B.
