Proc. 2010-06 Texas Funeral Directors Week 10-04-10-09
PROCLAMATION NO. 2010-6
WHEREAS Funeral service has been a proud profession and tradition in Texas for more than
100 years, and is a profession that played a significant part in the growth of cities
and towns across Texas; and
WHEREAS many funeral directors in Texas profess to a spiritual calling to serve in their
professional capacity and take pride in standing on the shoulders of those first
traveling undertakers, early hardware store owners and carpenters who provided
an undertaking parlor space and built caskets whenever there was a death in the
community; and
WHEREAS funeral homes, which evolved from the undertaking parlors in the late 1920s, have
provided a home-like environment in which members of the community may come
to make funeral arrangements, hold wakes and visitations as well as traditional
funeral and memorial services; and
WHEREAS the Texas Funeral Directors Association, founded in 1886, now represents the more
than 5000 funeral directors and funeral service professionals in Texas who
continue to serve Texas consumers by upholding TFDA’s high standards of honesty,
integrity, and professionalism; and
WHEREAS for the fourth consecutive year, Governor Rick Perry has designated the first week
of October as Texas Funeral Directors Week to honor funeral directors across the
state;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor
of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
October 4-10, 2009
be declared: “Texas Funeral Directors Week”
in the City of Huntsville and call upon our citizens to become more aware of the services funeral
directors provide as well as the place of funeral homes in the local community.
