Proc. 2010-03 Sam Houston State University Day 10-10-09 PROCLAMATION NO. 2010-3 WHEREAS Sam Houston State University began as the first teacher-training institution west of the Mississippi, with its establishment on April 21, 1879 as Sam Houston Normal Institute, having its first classes on October 10, 1879; and WHEREAS in 1918, the curriculum was expanded to four years and in 1923 it became known as Sam Houston State Teacher’s College, Sam Houston State College in 1965, and finally as Sam Houston State University in 1969; and WHEREAS Sam Houston State University has achieved state, regional and national accreditation and offers an academic program which provides 79 undergraduate degrees, 54 graduate degrees and five doctoral programs. Sam Houston is also a member of the Texas State University System and is accredited by more than 20 national and state agencies; and WHEREAS Sam Houston State University has experienced a strong and healthy growth over the last 130 years, from a recorded 109 students in 1881 to its current population of more than 16,660 students from over 53 countries; and WHEREAS the City of Huntsville recognized the prosperity which has come to the community because of Sam Houston State University and realizes the fine quality of this growth; and WHEREAS the City of Huntsville wishes to join in with those at Sam Houston State University to th celebrate the occasion of its 130 year and to offer its continued support of the university community; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: October 10, 2009 be declared: “Sam Houston State University Day” th in the City of Huntsville and call upon our citizens to join in the 130 Anniversary Celebration and recognize the accomplishments and progress attained by Sam Houston State University over its 130 years.
