Proc. 2010-12 Sam Houston Statue Day 10-24-09 PROCLAMATION NO. 2010-12 WHEREAS Sam Houston came to Huntsville in 1832 to assist in the development of Texas; and WHEREAS Sam Houston became the Commander-in-Chief of the Texas Army in 1835 at the beginning of the Texas Revolutionary War and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on his forty-third birthday; and WHEREAS The Battle of San Jacinto began in April 1836 with Sam Houston leading the way to st victory in eighteen minutes on April 21, 1836; and WHEREAS Sam Houston became the first and third President of Texas and also served as a United States Senator from Texas, and as the Governor of Texas; and WHEREAS The Sam Houston Statue – which is titled “A Tribute to Courage” - is the third largest Statue in the World and the tallest statue of an American hero in the world; and WHEREAS Over the past fifteen years, the Sam Houston Statue Visitors Center has welcomed over 776,000 visitors from more than 111 countries; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: October 24, 2009 be declared: “Sam Houston Statue Day” in the City of Huntsville and call upon our citizens to join in the celebration of this monument and to acknowledge its special meaning to our community.
