PROCLAMATION
NO. 2013-21
WHEREAS Article 6144a of the Texas Revised Civil Statutes sets apart annually the

entire week in which Texas Independence Day, March 2, occurs, as
“Texas Week”; and
WHEREAS the Republic of Texas was born on March 2, 1836, when delegates from
throughout what was the Mexican Department of Texas convened at
Washington-on-the-Brazos and signed the Texas Declaration of
Independence; and
WHEREAS from the fall of 1835 to spring 1836, Texans of all backgrounds came
together to fight for liberty and better government, enduring hardship
and defeat, most notably at the Alamo and Goliad; and

WHEREAS the city of Huntsville this year recognizes the 150 anniversary of the
death of Texan and American hero General Sam Houston here in
Huntsville, who was born on March 2, who helped assure this onetime
sovereign nation of its victory.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me
as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
March 3-9, 2013
be declared: “Texas Week”
in the city of Huntsville, and encourage all citizens to exalt and extol the
determination of Texan forces in 1836 and the continued significance of March 2 and
Texas Week.
