PROCLAMATION
NO. 2012-36
WHEREAS since 2004, Relay for Life has been held annually in our community as an
activity of the American Cancer Society to promote cancer awareness and
provide an opportunity to fight back against cancer; and
WHEREAS money raised supports the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives
and creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays – by helping
people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures for cancer, and
by fighting back; and
WHEREAS the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a nationwide signature activity
and funded more than $150 million in cancer research last year through
money raised in communities across the United States; and
WHEREAS Relay for Life gives us a unique opportunity to come together and remember
those who have lost their courageous battle with cancer; and
WHEREAS the Relay for Life in Walker County has raised over $639,933 to fight cancer,
increase community awareness of cancer, and stimulate a real sense of
relationship and camaraderie among the participants.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in
me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
April 27, 2012
be declared: Relay for Life Day
in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to acknowledge this unique and effective
means of enhancing community goodwill while raising funds for the American Cancer
Society.
