PROCLAMATION
NO. 2013-11
WHEREAS Wendell Harold Baker was born on November 13, 1922, in Walker County, where he was
raised with his ten siblings; and
WHEREAS Wendell was an intelligent and curious student and avid learner, he served as a U.S.
Army medical technician in World War II, worked as a chemical engineer for
Goodyear for twenty-five years, and taught in public school or twelve years ; and
WHEREAS during this time, Wendell also had the good fortune to meet and marry Augusta Jones
in 1945, with whom he raised five children who have blessed them both with eleven
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS Wendell has always been aware of the need to take part in the betterment of his
community, having benefitted us all with his work with the Voter’s League, the NAACP,
the boards of the Walker County Hospital District and the Community Daycare Center,
to name just a few; and
WHEREAS we recognize the accomplishments of Wendell Baker, Sr. today, let us not forget his
efforts in the integration of Sam Houston State University and his book on the
experiences of his life, If Not Me, Who?
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me
as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
November 13, 2012
be declared: “Wendell Harold Baker Day”
in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to me in honoring this devoted
member of our community, who has given so much for so long.
