Proc. 2012-05 Fire Prevention Week 10-09-15-11
PROCLAMATION
NO. 2012-05
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those
living in and visiting our city; and
WHEREAS fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are
where people are at greatest risk to fire; and
WHEREAS nearly 3,000 people die each year as a result of home fires and working smoke
alarms cut the chance of dying in a reported fire in half. The National Fire
Protection Association recommends at least one smoke alarm in every level of the
home, outside all sleeping areas, and in all bedrooms; and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of
home fires and home fire deaths and injuries through prevention and proper
education; and
WHEREAS the State of Texas is in Extreme Drought Conditions, and, in 2011, around 23,519 fires
had burned 3,795,280 acres, 2,742 homes, and over 4,000 other structures, and
49.4% of all of the acreage burned in the United States in 2011 was burned in Texas;
and
WHEREAS the 2011 Fire Prevention Week Theme, “Protect Your Family from Fire”, effectively
serves to remind us of all the simple actions we can take to keep our homes and
families safe from fire during the coming year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me
as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
October 9 through October 15, 2011
be declared: “Fire Prevention Week”
in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to protect their homes and families by
heeding the potentially life-saving messages of Fire Prevention Week 2011, and to support
the many activities and efforts of the City’s fire and emergency services.
