PROCLAMATION
NO. 2014-09
WHEREAS Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in
Washington D.C. on January 9, 1914, by three young African-American
male students: Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F.
Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, who wanted to organize a Greek
letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood,
scholarship, and service; and
WHEREAS service to all mankind has been the mission of Phi Beta Sigma for 100 years
and is mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture For Service and Service
For Humanity”; and
WHEREAS the brotherhood of Phi Beta Sigma has contributed to many hours of
community service, political leadership, sports, education, and progressive
national programs such as the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, The Phi
Beta Federal Credit Union, and the Sigma Beta Club Foundation; and
WHEREAS Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will celebrate 100 years as an organization
at the Gulf Coast Regional Conference and will honor their 100th year in
Fort Worth, Texas, in January 2014.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me
as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
January 10-12, 2014
be declared:
“Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Days”
in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to recognize this outstanding
organization, Phi Beta Sigma, Inc., for their outstanding service to the national community.
