PROCLAMATION
NO. 2018-13
WHEREAS one in five women and one in sixteen men report surviving rape or attempted rape while in college, and, on average, there are 321,500 victims ages 12 or older of rape and sexual
assault each year in the United States; and
WHEREAS it should be noted that the presence of a bystander makes a completed rape 44% less likely to occur; and
WHEREAS during the month of April, Sam Houston State University, including numerous departments, student organizations, and law enforcement, joins Walker County, the City of Huntsville,
HPD, SAAFE House and our community to expand awareness and prevention of sexual assault locally; and
WHEREAS all community members can help by supporting Denim Day and Ignite the Night on April 25th, among other activities and events.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
April 2018
be declared: Sexual Assault Awareness Month
in the City of Huntsville, and encourage residents to recognize the need to bring increased awareness and education to this issue.
