PROCLAMATION
No. 2018-06
WHEREAS the city of Huntsville is honored to be known as the historical home of Sam Houston’s history, his family’s special homesteads, and his final resting place; and
WHEREAS since yesterday marked the anniversary that this Texas hero was inaugurated as the first president of the Republic of Texas and the 23rd birthday of the Statue known as A Tribute
to Courage, it is appropriate we gather on this, the 23rd day of October; and
WHEREAS the Sam Houston Statue has been the front door to Huntsville for 23 years, and today we celebrate the groundbreaking of a project that has been in the making for several years.
The Statue Visitor Center opened October 22, 1994, and over one million-three hundred thousand visitors have signed the guest book since, from all over the United States and 28 other
countries; and
WHEREAS the expanded center will welcome groups of students, senior citizens, families, and tourists, and will be a showcase location to host receptions and events.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in
me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that

be designated as: SAM HOUSTON STATUE VISITOR CENTER EXPANSION GROUNDBREAKING DAY
in Huntsville, Texas, and urge all citizens to participate in observance of this significant anniversary.
