PROCLAMATION
No. 2017-10
WHEREAS the city of Huntsville is honored to be known as the historical home of Sam Houston’s history, his family’s special homesteads, and his final resting place; and
WHEREAS today marks the anniversary that this Texas hero was inaugurated as the first president of the Republic of Texas; and
WHEREAS on October 22, 1936, in what is now West Columbia, Texas, the Republic of Texas saw the culmination of its dream of freedom and independence exemplified in their wartime leader
who now took the reins of government of the new nation; and
WHEREAS President Sam Houston presided for a second term as president of Texas again beginning in 1841 and then went on to serve the State of Texas as a United States Senator and as
Governor; and
WHEREAS throughout the 180 years since Houston’s first inaugural, Texas has continued to exemplify the highest hopes and superior traits of its first leader.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in
me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that

be designated as: PRESIDENT SAM HOUSTON DAY
in Huntsville, Texas, and urge all citizens to participate in observance of this significant anniversary.
