PROCLAMATION
NO. 2020-22
WHEREAS In the United States, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it and call attention
to the fact that sexual harassment, assault, and abuse are is widespread and impact every person in this community; and
WHEREAS Rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment harm our community, and statistics show one in five women and one in 67 men will be raped at some point in their lives; Child sexual
abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual assault before age 18; and on campus, one in five women
and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college; and
WHEREAS during the month of April, the City of Huntsville joins Sam Houston State University, including numerous departments, student organizations, and law enforcement, Walker County,
HPD, SAAFE House and our community to expand awareness and prevention of sexual assault locally; and
WHEREAS this is the 19th anniversary of the Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the theme is “I Ask” helps empower all of us to put consent into practice and shares the message that asking
for consent is a normal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

be declared: Sexual Assault Awareness Month
in the City of Huntsville and encourage everyone to join advocates and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual violence.
