PROCLAMATION
No. 2016-09
WHEREAS Richard Haas is known as the premier architectural-illusion muralist in the nation and he came to Huntsville, at the City’s invitation, in 1988 to look at the possibility for
his murals in Downtown Huntsville; and
WHEREAS the City and property owners joined in a project to ask Mr. Haas to design architectural murals for Downtown buildings, and he subsequently worked with preservation architect
Kim Williams to address the structures and the facades of the buildings as well as vacant spaces; and
WHEREAS Richard Haas’ designs were accepted and painted onto fourteen Huntsville buildings with funding from the Meadows Foundation of Texas, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the
Huntsville Arts Commission, making Huntsville the home of the greatest number of Haas murals in any city in the nation; and
WHEREAS Mr. Haas now generously donates all his working drawings and paintings for the Huntsville project to the City of Huntsville to be housed primarily at the Huntsville Public library.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that

be designated as: Richard Haas Day
in Huntsville, Texas, and urge all citizens to enjoy these murals and park spaces, which form an integral part of the revitalization of our downtown.
