PROCLAMATION
No. 2016-05
WHEREAS since 1985, the first Monday in October has been declared World Habitat Day in order to recognize the vast housing need in cities around the world and to acknowledge that each
year 10 million people die from substandard housing and living conditions; and
WHEREAS an estimated 1.6 billion people live in inadequate shelter, and a child in inadequate housing is 10 times more likely to contract serious health problems than his counterparts
in adequate housing, and is less likely to graduate from high school; and
WHEREAS Habitat for Humanity has built over 350,000 houses around the world, including 15 locally, providing more than 1.75 million people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable
shelter; and
WHEREAS World Habitat Day is a collaborative effort of affiliates around the globe to raise public awareness of the importance of affordable housing and resources to families in need;
and
WHEREAS Habitat for Humanity of Huntsville recognizes that it will take the efforts of the community and its leaders to provide adequate shelter, and. with the involvement of our local
community, we can change the reality for future generations in our community and around the globe.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that

be designated as: World Habitat Day
in Huntsville, Texas, and urge all citizens to recommit themselves to aid Habitat for Humanity of Huntsville in meeting the affordable housing and community development needs of the
community.
