Proc. 2020-07 - Sam Houston Statue Day - 10/22/2019 P roclamation N0. 2020-07 WHEREAS the Sam Houston Statue has been the front door to Huntsville for 25 years, and today we celebrate that long history. The Statue Visitor Center opened October 22, 1994, and well over one million visitors have signed the guest book since, from all over the United States and 28 other countries; and WHEREAS, the city of Huntsville is honored to be known as the historical home of Sam Houston’s history, his family’s special homesteads, and his final resting place; and WHEREAS, the Statue welcomes travelers, visitors and residents daily, standing 67-feet tall along Interstate 45, a symbol for all who pass by, and the world’s tallest statue of an American hero; and WHEREAS, General Sam Houston was cast in 30 tons of concrete and steel by David Adickes, named “A Tribute to Courage”, and stands proudly on a 10-foot Texas sunset granite base; and WHEREAS, residents of #HomeSweetHuntsville stand proudly by our found father who can be seen for miles, day and night. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me on behalf of the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: October 22, 2019 be declared: Sam Houston Statue Day in the City of Huntsville and urge the residents of our community, and communities across the country, to take time to enjoy the warm and inviting Sam Houston Statue and Visitors Center. nd PROCLAIMED AND SIGNED this, the 22 day of October 2019. _________________ Andy Brauninger, Mayor
