WHEREAS increasing public safety through the reduction of fatalities and injuries resulting
from motor vehicle accidents is a goal of the City of Huntsville; and
WHEREAS text messaging while driving has been identified as a public health risk, when
studies have noted that text messaging while driving causes up to a 400 percent
increase in time spent with eyes off the road; and
WHEREAS the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia
Tech Transportation Institute(VTTI)estimate that nearly eighty percent of crashes
and sixty-five percent of near crashes involve some form of driver inattention,
totaling approximately 4.78 million crashes, more than 34,000 fatalities, and as
much as $184 billion in economic damages annually; and
WHEREAS AT&T has launched a campaign to raise public awareness about the risks of texting
and driving and reminds all wireless consumers, especially youth, that text
messages can, and should, wait until after driving.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

be declared:
"TEXTING & DRIVING - IT CAN WAIT"DAY
in the City of Huntsville and urge all residents to commit to refraining from texting while
driving.
