Proc. 2012-47 Gibbs -Powell Home Day 05-18-12 -_ w PROCLAMATION NO. 2012-47 WHEREAS Thomas Gibbs purchased Lot 41 in Block 2 in the town of Huntsville in November 1841, where 21 years later he built a Greek Revival house; and WHEREAS the Gibbs family had all moved out by the 1880s, when the home began to take in female boarders from the Sam Houston Normal Institute; and WHEREAS in 1897, the children of Thomas Gibbs sold the house to Judge Ben H. Powell, II, of Montgomery County, and was continuously occupied as the Powell family home from 1897 to 1983; and WHEREAS the Gibbs-Powell Home is now utilized as the Walker County Museum as a special part of Huntsville's rich heritage, and today honored both as part of National Preservation Month and in special recognition of its 150th anniversary. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: MAY 18, 2012 be declared: Gibbs-Powell Home Day in the City of Huntsville and urge all citizens to visit and support this unique treasure of our community.
