Everything you always wanted to know about
the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) Fund will be
addressed at the annual HOT Workshop on
Thursday, March 24. Held this year at the
Huntsville Library Community Room from
8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., the event is
required for any group or individual
interested in applying for HOT funds. The
City allocates a portion of the collections
annually to assist with funding projects and
events that promote the local hotel and
convention industry.
Three dynamic speakers will offer their
expertise in tourism and how a community
can develop a tourist-driven culture. Scott
Joslove, President and CEO, Texas Hotel &
Lodging Association (the largest hotel
association in the nation), will speak on who,
what, why, and how HOT funds are collected
and should be spent. Joslove aided
legislators to craft the statutes on this issue
and is widely considered an expert in the use
of HOT funds. Afterwards, the Tourism and
Cultural Services Department staff will
review the application packet and the
process for submitting the application.
Elizabeth Taylor, consultant and former CVB
& Convention Center Director for the City of
Waco, will present Tourism Marketing for the
Community, a discussion of shifting
marketing strategies beyond the borders of
staff and volunteers. Lunchtime presenter
Arthur Andrews is a nationally known
motivational speaker who will offer advice on
how to develop a new perspective with a
mindset for success.
The event is open to all who register but
attendance is mandatory for any group or
individual planning to apply for HOT funds in
the City's FY 2016-17 budget.
Kimm Thomas, Director of Tourism &
Cultural Services said, "This is going to be
an excellent opportunity for those interested
in the laws regarding HOT funding and in
how to get the community to help market
your event. It should be a very educational
and we are hoping for a great turnout."
Space is limited and registration must be
received by March 17. Register by calling the
City of Huntsville Tourism and Cultural
Services Department at 936-291-5935. The
cost is $25.00 per person and includes a
fajita buffet lunch from Mama Juanita's. For
more information, contact Thomas at
