Proc. 2011-42 Women's Suffrage Day 08-20-11PROCLAMATION NO. 2011-42 WHEREAS the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted women the right to vote was ratified on August 18, 1920; and WHEREAS the ratification of the 19th Amendment came after a struggle of over 70 years by historical figures including Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton; and WHEREAS members of the Walker County Democrats recognize women's suffrage as a critical, nationwide victory that transcends partisan distinctions; and WHEREAS it is extremely important for citizens — both men and women — to remember the sacrifices made to reach this pivotal point in our country's history. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: August 20, 2011 be declared: "Women's Suffrage Day" in the City of Huntsville, and urge all citizens to recognize the historical and societal importance of the women's suffrage movement.
